I have received a lot of emails regarding documentation and school counseling planners. Renee Stack, one of my district's elementary school counselors, sent out a bunch of great forms that could definitely meet your needs.

I absolutely love your site! I am new to elementary counseling this year and have gotten so many great ideas! Keep them coming :) and any advice you'd give to first-timers?

Sorry I'm just now getting back to you! I didn't get an email notification of your post! :(

Thank you so much for your positive feedback. My best advice is develop strong, genuine relationships with your students, staff, and parents. That will take you far. Also, be patient. People love a good listener and someone who can remain calm under pressure. :)

Marissa, you are so generous with your ideas and organizational strategies and so thorough! It's really impressive and I know it takes a ton of your time. Thank you so much for all you do for all our school counseling colleagues!

Oh my gosh. This was so helpful!!! I am a counselor at a large elementary school in the inner city and I always struggle with what I should document because I am so busy. Thank you so much. I took notes and I am implementing these ideas starting Monday :)

Thank you, Cory! I'm glad you found this helpful. I definitely understand the feeling and my building is pretty small. Documentation requires a LOT of pre-planning. Good luck! :)

Thanks for sharing! I LOVE this post and your blog! I watched the podcast and was wondering how you set up your excel spreadsheet? I've tried several things but I haven't found a way I love that's quick and easy. Do you log all the information from your one on one sessions or just the important parts?

Thanks so much, Jennifer! You can find my spreadsheet here: http://www.elementaryschoolcounseling.org/individual-counseling-documents.html. I just track the number of sessions, who referred the student, and how much time I've spent with them. The details are in the paper notes that I take and put in each student's file (for my personal use). I have two locked file cabinets in my office to store my counseling records. If you have any follow-up questions, just let me know! :)
