No Name-Calling Awareness Week

Picture

Purpose

To help students become aware of their actions, as well as the actions of others.

When?

Typically, my school schedules No Name-Calling Awareness Week in January. However, during the 2011-2012 school year, our Positive Behavior Support Committee decided to combine Bully Free Awareness Week and No Name-Calling Awareness Week into "Random Acts of Kindness Week".

Events

In addition to daily messages on the morning announcements, we have a creative expression contest and I allow teachers to sign-up for classroom counseling lessons (on the theme of no name-calling awareness).

PAWS Cards

Picture
At my school, we have a positive behavior support system in place called PAWS, where students are given PAWS cards for showing Pride, good Attitude, Work ethic, and Self control. During No Name-Calling Awareness Week, students can give each other PAWS cards. These go on a positive behavior wall for the week.

Lessons

I use lessons from my Making and Keeping Friends and Bullying classroom sessions. I also have an extra lesson if students have already seen my other options.

One of my favorite stories is Chrysanthemum. The students love it and the story helps students reflect on how they treat one another. We discuss the positive and negative names we are called at school, reflecting as we go. Then, we brainstorm how we can prevent and respond to negative names at school.

Additional Information

I was recently contacted by Sarah Fudin, the Social Media and Outreach Coordinator for the Masters of Arts in Teaching Program at the University of Southern California. She shared an infographic that provides a lot of information about bullying. Click here to see the entire blog post.
